WEBSTER TOWN HALL TO CLOSE EARLY ON ECLIPSE DAY
Webster Town Hall, Webster Justice Court to close to the public at 1pm on April 8, 2024;
Early closure due to forecasted influx of traffic as a result of total solar eclipse
Webster, NY— Webster Town Supervisor Tom Flaherty announced the early closure of Webster Town Hall on Monday, April 8, upon the recommendation of Webster Police Chief Dennis Kohlmeier. The town hall is set to close to the public at 1pm on the day of the total solar eclipse. Webster Town Court will also be closing at 1pm on April 8. The decision to close is intended to avoid exacerbating road traffic near the time of the eclipse reaching totality.
“The Town of Webster is eagerly anticipating this once-in-a-lifetime event,” said Flaherty. “As with any event of this magnitude, we can expect to see an increase in traffic and travel delays. To avoid exacerbating traffic as the eclipse reaches totality, Webster Town Hall will be closing at 1pm, upon the recommendation of Chief Kohlmeier. We encourage everyone to safely enjoy this historic event!”
The Greater Rochester region is expected to welcome at least 375,000 visitors to the area for the eclipse. With increased activity in the area, traffic will be significantly impacted, especially in the hours before and after totality.
“The safety of the Webster residents and visitors to our community is of utmost importance,” said Kohlmeier. “As Webster welcomes thousands of travelers for the eclipse, it is our responsibility to ensure that roads are as safe as possible. Closing the town hall and town court buildings early will reduce traffic and eliminate potential unnecessary travel as totality approaches.”
While Webster Town Hall will be closing early on April 8, other town facilities will remain open for the delivery of services. In addition, Webster Public Library will be hosting family-friendly eclipse programming at the Webster Recreation Center, 1350 Chiyoda Drive, from 1pm to 5pm on April 8. More information about this event can be found on the library’s website.
